A Complete Guide to Motorcycle Battery Models

Aug 23, 2025 Leave a message

When it comes to motorcycle maintenance, the battery is truly a "small component with a big impact." The question arises: With so many battery models, what do YTX, 12N, and GTZ mean? And how can you choose the right one?

1. What are the common motorcycle battery models?

Motorcycle battery models can be primarily categorized into three series:

1) YTX Series (Maintenance-Free Batteries)

This is the most widely used model.

Examples: YTX5L-BS, YTX7A-BS

"YTX" stands for maintenance-free, meaning no watering is required.

"5L" or "7A" indicates the battery capacity; the larger the number, the more power it can hold.

"-BS" stands for bottled acid (Battery Sealed). Once purchased, it's sealed and refilled with acid once, leaving it for future maintenance.

2) 12N Series (Traditional Lead-Acid Batteries)

This is an older model and requires regular distilled water addition. Examples: 12N7-3B, 12N9-BS

"12N" stands for 12V.

"7" or "9" stands for capacity (Ah). The higher the number, the longer the battery life.

Regular maintenance is required, including adding water and cleaning.

3) GTZ / GTX / FTX series (different brands have different naming conventions)

These are custom model names used by different brands, but they are essentially similar to YTX.

Examples: GTZ7S, FTX9-BS

Commonly seen in brands like GS, Taiwan Yuasa, and Fengfan. Although they may appear different, the size, voltage, and capacity are often equivalent.

2. How do I understand the meaning of battery model numbers?

Take the YTX7A-BS as an example:

YTX: Maintenance-free

7A: Capacity 7 ampere-hours (Ah)

-BS: Bottled acid, sealed after filling, maintenance-free

Let's look at the 12N9-4B:

12: 12V voltage

N: Traditional lead-acid battery

9: Capacity 9Ah

4B: Size code, related to the size of the case

Tip: When buying batteries, remember the original model number; you can always buy the correct one.
