What is battery capacity?
Battery capacity is expressed in "Ah," or ampere-hours.
For example, a 12Ah battery means it can be used for 12 hours at 1 ampere, or 6 hours at 2 amperes.
For a 12V battery, the total energy of 12Ah is 12V × 12Ah = 144Wh (watt-hours). Watt-hours represent the amount of electrical energy a battery can output.
How do you calculate the battery capacity you need?
You only need to know two numbers:
How much power (W) or current (A) does your device use?
How long do you expect it to last (hours)?
With these two numbers, you can use the following method:
If you know the power, use this formula:
Battery capacity (Ah) = Power × Time ÷ Battery voltage
For example, if your device draws 24 watts, you expect it to last for 6 hours, and your battery is 12V:
24 × 6 ÷ 12 = 12Ah
This means you need a 12Ah battery.
What capacity do different applications require? Different devices require different amounts of power:
Small LED lights require approximately 3Ah to 5Ah batteries.
Wireless speakers require approximately 6Ah to 10Ah.
Motorcycle starting batteries typically require 6Ah to 12Ah.
Outdoor power supplies and RV equipment may require over 20Ah.
Electronic devices and electric scooters may require over 50Ah.
