RID stands for the Regulations Concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Rail, which is an international regulation specifically for the carriage of dangerous goods (such as lithium motorcycle batteries) by rail. This regulation has been developed by the Intergovernmental Organisation for International Transport by Rail (OTIF) and is highly consistent with the European Agreement on the Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (ADR).
The RID originated in the late 19th century and was gradually improved with the development of railway transportation. RID is currently part of Annex C of the Convention on International Carriage by Rail (COTIF) and applies to all Member States that have signed COTIF.
RID covers a wide range of dangerous goods, including explosive substances, flammable liquids and gases, corrosive substances, toxic or infectious substances, radioactive substances, and hazardous chemicals including lithium batteries.
The main functions are as follows:
International consistency
Synergies with ADR (Road transport) and IMDG (Sea transport) rules to provide uniform standards for multimodal transport.
Protect people, property, and the environment
Reduce the risk of leaks, fires, or explosions during transportation.
Regulate the rail transport of dangerous goods
Ensure the safety of dangerous goods in the process of rail transport.
