A Guide to Using a Jump Starter in Winter

Aug 07, 2025 Leave a message

With the arrival of winter and the sudden drop in temperature, many car owners face a major problem: their car won't start. This is when a jump starter comes in handy. But the question is: Can a jump starter still function properly in cold temperatures? How can it be used safely and effectively?

1. Why are cars more likely to misfire in winter?

There are two main reasons why cars have trouble starting in cold weather:

Battery performance degradation: Lead-acid or lithium batteries lose their discharge capacity at low temperatures, resulting in insufficient voltage to power the starter motor.

Engine oil thickening: This increases engine resistance and requires more power to start.

2. Can a jump starter still be used in winter?

Yes, but be careful about the temperature and method!

Most lithium-ion jump starters operate between -20°C and 60°C. However, battery activity decreases at low temperatures, affecting their discharge capacity. Using the jump starter in sub-zero temperatures may result in:

Insufficient battery charge

Starting failure

Damage to battery life

-20 to 60

3. How to Use a Jump Starter Properly in Winter

✅ 1. Keep the jump starter charged.

Make sure the charge is above 80% before use.

It is recommended to charge jump starters every three months if they are not used for an extended period.

✅ 2. Preheat the device.

Do not leave the jump starter directly outside the car or in the snow.

Place it near a car heater or hold it in your hand for a few minutes to warm it up.

Let the battery return to above 0°C before use for best results.

✅ 3. Connect the battery correctly.

Connect the red clamp to the positive (+) terminal of the battery and the black clamp to the negative (-) terminal or a metal part of the engine.

Press the start button and try to start the engine.

After a successful start, disconnect the device and recharge it immediately.

✅ 4. Use a product that supports low-temperature starting.

If winter temperatures in your area frequently drop below -10°C, it is recommended to purchase a model that supports temperatures of -20°C or lower.

4. Purchasing Recommendations

If you are a buyer or wholesaler of auto parts, camping, outdoor, or emergency rescue products, you should pay attention to the following:

✅ Choose a lithium-ion battery model that supports low-temperature starting (with the operating temperature range marked).

✅ Prioritize products with high current output (600A-2000A) to accommodate a wider range of vehicle models.

✅ Check for multi-function functionality (such as power bank, lighting, USB output, etc.).

✅ Choose products with safety certifications such as CE, RoHS, and UN38.3 for export convenience.

✅ OEM/ODM customization available to enhance brand influence.
