Why is my motorcycle so hard to start?

Oct 08, 2025 Leave a message

Sometimes, getting ready for a ride early in the morning only to find it won't start no matter how hard you try is frustrating. It was working perfectly yesterday, so why is it "breaking down" today?

Today, I'll explain the possible issues and how to fix them in simple terms.

1. Dead battery

This is the most common cause. If you hear a clicking sound when you press the start button but the bike won't start, or if the lights dim, it's likely that the battery is low.

Solution:

If you have a jump starter, try jumping the bike on its own.

If you don't have one, you need to replace or recharge the battery.

It's recommended to check whether you have a lead-acid or lithium battery; lithium batteries are more durable and more resistant to cold temperatures.

2. Long periods of inactivity

If your motorcycle hasn't been ridden for a long time, the battery will gradually discharge, and the fuel line may become clogged.

Solution:

Start the bike regularly, even when you're not riding it. Let the engine run for a few minutes.

If it's been sitting for too long, check the battery voltage and clean the fuel line.

3. Too Cold Weather

In cold weather, especially in winter, battery performance declines and engine oil thickens, both of which can affect starting.

Solution:

Use winter engine oil suitable for low temperatures;

Choose a lithium-ion battery with more stable performance and better resistance to low temperatures;

Turn the key on for a few seconds before starting to preheat the battery.

4. Spark Plug or Fuel Line Problems

Aging spark plugs, clogged fuel lines, or poor-quality fuel can lead to incomplete combustion, making it difficult to start the motorcycle.

Solution:

Replace spark plugs regularly;

Check for low-quality fuel or sediment in the fuel tank;

Seek a mechanic for minor maintenance to clean the fuel system.

5. Poor or aged battery

Many people buy their motorcycles with original batteries, which degrade over the years and are prone to problems.

Solution:

Replace with a high-quality lithium-ion battery, such as Jack Power motorcycle batteries, which are compact, lightweight, and quick to start.

Remember to choose a battery with the appropriate voltage and capacity; don't buy the wrong model just to save money.
